Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max Overview

Apple has confused many potential buyers with its iPhone 12 series who have an unprecedented four devices. However, if there is one phone in the series that has a clear target audience then it should be the iPhone 12 Pro Max. After reviewing the base iPhone 12, the smaller iPhone 12 Mini, and the middle ground iPhone 12 Pro, we have now reached the largest phones in the series aimed at professionals - professionals, pro users and progress.

6.7 inch Super Retina XDR OLED (1284 x 2778p, ~ 458 PPI) | Apple A14 Bionic (128GB / 256GB / 512GB with 6GB RAM) | 12 MP, f / 1.6, 26mm (wide) + 12 MP, f / 2.2, 65mm (telephoto) + 12 MP, f / 2.4, 120˚, 13mm (Ultravide) + TOF 3D LiDAR scanner (depth) + 12 MP, f / 2.2, 23 mm (wide) front camera | Li-ion 3687 mAh battery | 228 g |

What is New in it?

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is a big phone. In fact, it is a few centimeters larger than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. This means that it has slightly better resolution along with a better screen-to-body ratio. However, its weight is almost the same as the previous version and is despite the ceramic coating and steel frame.

The flat edges make the design very stylish. Remember, Apple did not have a big phone when it last used the flat edge design on the iPhone. But the flat edges can be a bit tricky to hold the phone at times, especially when it's cold. So I recommend investing in a good cover that protects the phone and provides a good grip at all times.

Some changes have been made to the camera department in the iPhone 12 Pro Max. For example, it now has a larger telephoto lens and can zoom 12x instead of the first 10x. Even the iPhone 12 Pro cannot do this. In addition, this camera can now shoot up to 60fps in Dolby Vision HDR, which the iPhone 12 cannot. Then there is the LIDAR sensor which gives depth to the camera.

Another thing you should keep in mind is that the iPhone 12 Pro Max has about 10 percent less battery than its predecessor, although I did not notice much change in battery life.

Pros in iPhone 12 Pro Max

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is clearly the pinnacle of smartphone technology. The best processor in the business is packed with professional-grade camera units, stunning performance, and a stylish design. So if you want to tell the world that you have arrived, then this is the phone to buy this year.

For the past few years Apple has been making sure that all its phones have the same processor in a year. And this guarantee of equal performance at price points is something very unique to Apple at the moment. However, the experience is clearly different if you move up the value chain, as phones like the Pro Max have more equipment to use that A14 bionic processor.

So while the UI / UX of all iPhone 12 series phones is the same, Pro Max offers some premium camera experiences that other phones cannot. For example, Dolby Vision HDR recording at 60fps is as good as most DSLRs can offer at this time. This is the phone you would buy if you are shooting video at a professional level but not always using DSLRs. This is the phone you would buy if you are an avid photographer, but not someone who has to carry a big camera to prove it. It is indeed a professional smartphone camera.

I tried it with a range of video settings in low and normal light, and the camera is very good at making subtle changes in color and even keeping track of the subject. I pay attention to the fact that the phone has come to me at a time when I can't really step outside and shoot a lot, but I've managed to recreate a lot of scenarios that I can Was. And I believe this camera is on top of it.

When you try to record in 4K HDR at 60fps, this detail is almost cinematic. Dolby Vision HDR is on by default in this mode, but you will need some California visuals to see that this phone is not skeggy in Delhi.

Where this iPhone is actually with video recording. I did not have much options to advance the camera capabilities of this phone. However, I tried it with colorful Diwali lights at midnight and you can see the result for yourself. In this video, you can see that despite the dark settings, the phone provides smooth image stabilization at all times. You can see subtle changes in the light and even the brightness which is different.

You can also view this camera by clicking regular photos, whether it is night or day. I think clearly that the camera is now faster at processing night scenes and what used to be 3 seconds earlier can now be captured in a shorter time frame.

Like the Pro, the Pro Max also has a LIDAR sensor in the camera rig. While this is primarily intended to offer a better AR experience, it clearly dramatically improves some shots. For example, compare these two shots of Buddha taken with the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 Pro Max without portrait mode activated, but on f16 settings. You can see how the iPhone 12 Pro Max is faster with this theme that almost pops into 3D effects. In addition, the iPhone 12 Pro Max offers a 2.5x optical zoom portrait against the 2x in its predecessor.

Over the years I have abandoned my camera in favor of an iPhone, with the iPhone 12 Pro Max pushing Apple up one level. Now you can shoot high-end video and edit it on the phone as well. A 30-second 4K clip that I shot and could be edited within a minute retained all the details. When doing so, the phone does not even whisper.

Cons in iPhone 12 Pro Max

The battery life of the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the same as last year's iPhone 11 Pro Max. It should be able to see you back home safely at a full charge with a very active day. However, it seems that this time the battery (3687 mAh) is smaller than last year's 3969 mAh cell. Since the phone has actually become larger than the last time, it is a bit difficult for me to understand why this shortage was required. My fear is that it will start showing as the phone and its battery age, especially to those using the phone in 5G. Indians are lucky to not have 5G to remove their new iPhones. Again, fast charging on the iPhone is now one of the best in the industry and will come to the rescue if you are out at odd locations.

There is no denying the fact that the iPhone, any iPhone, is a premium device. However, the price jump on the new iPhone 12 Pro Max model should be justified. Even if we consider the fact that the base model is now 128GB compared to the earlier 64GB, the price difference is significant. While I think it costs 5G in India, that becomes a bit of a future proofing tax.

Also, while it would be a small thing for a person buying an expensive phone, you would have to spend a few extra thousand bucks to get a regular charger or a new MagSafe charger as this phone comes in a thin box that does not. There is room for one of them.

Should you upgrade to it or not?

Yes, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a great buy for those who have professional workflows, including phones. These can be anything from stellar displays to top-end processing or the need for professional-grade video recording. However, if you have been using an iPhone in the last two years, it is too early to upgrade this one. For anyone using an older iPhone, it's time to move. For others, you jump ship for the best camera experience and a processor that can also do good to your next PC.
